There are different forms of chocolate, including white, milk and dark chocolate, which differ in their ingredients, and then there are differences in their nutritional properties.

Milk chocolate and dark chocolate have been extensively researched because they contain substances from the cocoa plant that are associated with many health benefits. White chocolate, on the other hand, actually only contains cocoa butter. Research findings suggest several health effects of eating chocolate regularly, including

1. Improved heart health

Dark chocolate and milk chocolate contain cocoa solids, although in different amounts. Cocoa contains flavonoids, which are antioxidants found in foods such as tea, berries and green leafy vegetables. Flavonoids offer numerous health benefits, including improving heart health. Since dark chocolate has a higher volume of cocoa solids, it is also rich in flavonoids. One study found that lipid profiles and blood pressure improved when moderate amounts of dark chocolate were consumed every one to two days.

According to a 2021 study published in the journal Nutrients, iron deficiency anaemia can lead to symptoms such as fatigue, weakness and brittle nails. Dark chocolate is a good source of iron, as a 50-gramme serving of dark chocolate contains 6 milligrammes of iron. Women between the ages of 19 and 50 need 18 milligrammes of iron per day and adult men need 8 milligrammes per day, according to the US National Institutes of Health. It should be noted, however, that milk chocolate contains only about 1 milligramme of iron per 50 grammes.

In a 2019 randomised controlled trial published in the journal Nutrients, daily consumption of dark chocolate for 30 days improved participants' cognitive performance. The researchers attribute the results to the methylxanthines in dark chocolate.

Negative effects

While eating chocolate has some potential health benefits, it also has some potential negative consequences. White chocolate and milk chocolate are high in saturated fat and added sugars. According to the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), excessive consumption of saturated fats and added sugars is associated with higher blood cholesterol levels and an increased risk of cardiovascular disease.

A single bar (50 g) of milk chocolate contains about 22 g of added sugar and 8 g of saturated fat, while a 50 g bar of white chocolate contains 25 g of added sugar and 16.5 g of saturated fat.
